This film is not based on the "Bible," but rather presents the inner spiritual conflict of faith through its storyline. When Israel is under Roman rule, the carpenter Jesus (played by Willem Dafoe) makes crosses for the Roman army and is troubled by what seems to be a divine calling. Jesus sets out to seek the truth and encounters the revolutionary Judas (played by Harvey Keitel) and a former friend, the prostitute Mary Magdalene, who criticize Jesus for his cowardice, solidifying his faith. More and more followers join Jesus' cause, and John the Baptist guides him into the desert. Jesus resists temptation and gains greater power, leading an assault on the Jerusalem temple and prompting Judas to betray him to the Roman authorities. While on the cross, Jesus receives a message from an angel; he steps down from the cross to live a normal life, until many years later when he discovers the truth about his fate... Based on the novel of the same name by Kazantzakis, since Scorsese first planned to bring this film to the screen in 1983, it has faced significant opposition from religious groups, causing repeated delays in production.
