The film tells the story of Murphy (played by Peter O'Toole) and his experiences at the end of World War II, where he is the sole survivor of a Nazi submarine attack. Rescued by Louis (played by Philippe Noiret), the two become friends. However, Murphy is driven by an obsession to destroy the Nazi submarine, for which he acquires a torpedo that was launched from the submarine but failed to explode. Yet just as Murphy is ready to execute his plan, news of the end of the war arrives. Despite the war being over, Murphy cannot forget the crimes of the Nazis and is determined not to let the submarine go. This creates an internal conflict: should he pursue personal revenge, even when the war has ended and peace has come? The challenges Murphy faces are not only technical but also psychological. Can he find justice in peacetime, and can he free himself from his obsession with the past?
