The story is set in a secluded villa in Tuscany, Italy, during the 1950s. Emilia Clarke plays a nurse named Verena, who is hired to care for a mute young heir who has stopped speaking after losing his biological mother, hoping to help him regain communication. As Verena observes the boy step by step, she begins to sense something is wrong; it seems a powerful and mysterious curse is controlling the child, and this curse originates from a stone wall in the villa.
