In the morning, the devout farmer Töre (Max von Sydow) and his wife pray, and then arrange for their daughter Karin to ride to church and deliver some candles. Karin dresses in her new finery and invites the family's foster daughter, Ingrid, to accompany her. Pregnant Ingrid has a reckless personality and has always been jealous of Karin's bright life. Before they set out, Ingrid hides a toad in Karin's food. When they reach a forest, Ingrid sends Karin on alone while she follows and watches. The three shepherds in the woods see Karin alone and approach her with ill intentions. After assaulting her, they kill Karin and take her coat. In the evening, the three shepherds stay at Töre's house and try to sell Karin's clothes to Töre's wife. A panicked Ingrid returns home and confesses to Töre about her curse on Karin. Töre bathes and changes clothes, and after whipping himself with birch branches, he is determined to take revenge for his daughter...
