"Spy War at Gushan Lake" is a legendary story set against a real historical backdrop. In the autumn of 1938, China's anti-Japanese frontline was retreating steadily, and the situation was precarious with the Wang puppet government causing an uproar. Zhao Zhipeng, the secretary of Wang Jingwei, was dissatisfied with Wang's treasonous acts and fled with a large number of important documents. After being pursued and injured by Japanese spies, he hid in the wealthy family of Suzhou known for Suzhou embroidery, the Yu family. The ubiquitous Japanese spies, having gotten wind of the situation, devised a malicious scheme. To combat the arrogant behavior of the Japanese invaders, the Nationalist government initiated "Operation Huqiu," to severely punish traitors and collaborators. The Military Intelligence Bureau dispatched capable agents, including Mei Ling and the so-called "Flower of Military Intelligence" Yan Linfeng, into Suzhou. However, news leaked out, and the Japanese and puppet forces had already sent a large number of agents to surround the Military Intelligence spies infiltrating Suzhou. A war without gunfire broke out on the ancient Shantang Street, fraught with peril. The Communist Party soon learned of the inside story of "Operation Huqiu," as well as the fact that before the war, the Wang Jingwei faction controlled the Nationalist secret police, which had woven a vast espionage network called "Deep Mountain Old Demon," accessible only to a few key figures like Wang Jingwei and puppet governor Wu Bozhai. More seriously, this group of spies was now being manipulated by the Japanese and puppet forces. In order to unearth this time bomb buried in the revolutionary base and to demonstrate their resolve to unite against Japan, the Communist intelligence department quickly took action, planning to break the espionage network starting with Wu Bozhai, and assist the Military Intelligence Bureau in completing "Operation Huqiu." The Communists dispatched a capable agent codenamed "Silver Fox," Fu Yifei, among others, to secretly assist "Flower of Military Intelligence" Yan Linfeng, repeatedly helping her escape from danger. Yan Linfeng's sister was Fu Yifei's lover, who tragically sacrificed herself years ago to protect Fu Yifei. Unaware of the truth, Yan Linfeng held a grudge against Fu Yifei, refusing to cooperate with him, making "Operation Huqiu" and Fu Yifei's mission even more difficult. At the same time, facing multiple lures and threats from the Japanese and puppet forces, the master of the Yu family, Old Master Yu, deliberately "faked his death" to protect the important documents left by Zhao Zhipeng. Little did he know that the cunning Japanese spy Lieutenant Li, codenamed "Gray Mouse," took advantage of the kind-hearted and naive Yu girl, Zimo, to win her love and learned the truth behind Old Master Yu's "fake death." Just as "Gray Mouse" was reveling in his success, his true nature was revealed by Fu Yifei. Fu Yifei cleverly set a trap and exposed "Gray Mouse" at a critical moment. Faced with the brutal reality, the naturally timid Zimo killed "Gray Mouse" with her own hands. Yan Linfeng, tasked with eliminating the traitor Wu Bozhai, was repeatedly thwarted by Fu Yifei, leaving her perplexed. Due to Fu Yifei's special mission, he couldn't explain in detail to Yan Linfeng given the circumstances at the time, leading to intense conflict between them. After enduring hardships and bloodshed, Fu Yifei and Yan Linfeng were about to complete "Operation Huqiu" when yet another major conspiracy struck them. The higher-ups of the Military Intelligence Bureau learned that Fu Yifei was not only obtaining information from Wang Jingwei's secretary but more importantly looking to open up a breach against the traitor Wu Bozhai, in search of the "Deep Mountain Old Demon" espionage network laid out by the secret police before the war. Chiang Kai-shek and Dai Li, who consistently opposed the Communists, knew that this espionage network, which was currently under Wang's puppet control, would be an important tool for their anti-Communist political struggle after the war ended. They were extremely unwilling to let the Communists dismantle this network. Consequently, the leader of the Military Intelligence Bureau, Dai Li, ordered Mei Ling, the head of "Operation Huqiu," to seize the espionage network and eliminate Fu Yifei. At this critical moment, Huang Zhixin, Mei Ling's former lover and Fu Yifei's Communist superior, stepped forward to reason with Mei Ling, appealing to her emotions, and fought to the death when Mei Ling and Yan Linfeng were surrounded by Japanese and puppet spies. He awakened the conscience hidden in Mei Ling's heart with his life, prompting Mei Ling and Yan Linfeng to decide to defect to the truth. They joined forces with Fu Yifei, and finally obtained the list of the espionage network from Wu Bozhai, but Mei Ling perished alongside him. At this point, Yan Linfeng learned that her sister was a Communist Party member who heroically sacrificed herself to protect Fu Yifei. She reconciled with Fu Yifei and opened her heart to him. A series of failures enraged the Japanese and puppet forces, leading them to massacre innocents, taking ordinary people as hostages, in an attempt to force Fu Yifei and Yan Linfeng to surrender and hand over the intelligence network. In order to uphold national dignity and protect the lives of ordinary people, Fu Yifei and Yan Linfeng, despite being outnumbered and in dire straits, managed to showcase unparalleled wisdom and courage. Fu Yifei defeated the cunning and treacherous leader of the Japanese cultural spies, Ishihara Taro. Meanwhile, the Communist underground organization used bombs to destroy the convoy carrying Japanese military officers on a battlefield tour, delivering a heavy blow to the Japanese invaders and making them pay a heavy price. Ultimately, with the help of patriotic individuals, Yan Linfeng rescued the severely injured Fu Yifei. At the same time, the base, upon receiving the espionage network list delivered by Communist underground couriers, swiftly dismantled and purged all Wang and puppet spies buried within.
