Between 1981 and 1985, during the dictatorship of Nicolae Ceaușescu, when Romania was one of the most severely affected countries by the Stalinist regime, a young boy named Mugu Călinescu ran through the streets at midnight, using white chalk to graffiti messages of resistance. He was arrested and interrogated by the secret police, ultimately ending in a mysterious death. Continuing the technique of drawing from diverse historical texts as seen in "Pursuing the Gypsies," director Radu Jude further adapts Gianina Cărbunariu's play into an unconventional "documentary drama" film. He uses monologues from characters in a theatrical setting, ceremonially reproducing the bureaucratic tone of state archives, along with the ideological control and dehumanization tactics of the state machinery. Beyond the ritual, he intersperses seemingly unrelated light entertainment, news footage, and political propaganda, allowing the audience to oscillate between the events surrounding the young boy, at times being present and at other times detached, experiencing the absurdity of parallel temporalities where the era's both vibrant celebrations and oppressive atmosphere coexist, while recognizing the media's manipulation by the dictatorial government to diminish attention on such events.
