The film tells the legendary story of Xuanzang, a high monk of the Tang Dynasty, who spent 17 years bravely journeying to India to obtain Buddhist scriptures despite facing numerous hardships and obstacles. During the prosperous era of the Tang Dynasty's Zhenguan period, the young monk Xuanzang (played by Huang Xiaoming) risked his life to escape the country in search of the true essence of Buddhism. Along the way, he encountered countless difficulties, natural disasters, and man-made calamities, and he deeply empathized with the suffering of the people. Surrounded by officials and soldiers, betrayed by his disciples, buried in the desert, and running out of food and water, Xuanzang remained focused on his quest for truth. Ultimately, he reached India, where he promoted compassion and diligently practiced Buddhism. By the time he returned home after successfully debating at the Undefended Assembly, he had become an elder over fifty years old.
