In a small village in Bengal, India, in the early 20th century. The hardships of life filled the poor families in the village with despair, worry, and discord. Harihar wrote poem after poem, play after play, but faced rejection everywhere and could not get published. Six years passed, and Harihar's house became more dilapidated, with poverty clinging to them relentlessly. Endless troubles entangled them. When the rich lost something, they blamed Durga for stealing it, and although his wife, Sarbojaya, could not bear such humiliation, she could only vent her anger on the children. Harihar hoped to revive the already declining family status with fame, but his meager income of eight rupees a month and heavy family burdens made it impossible for him to realize any of his beautiful plans, not even to ensure his family's basic needs were met. He had no choice but to seek a way out in a foreign land, earning a hard-earned sum in the city, but when he returned home, a great disaster awaited him: a storm had collapsed their house, and his twelve-year-old daughter Durga had died from illness, causing Sarbojaya to weep inconsolably. Seeing this tragic scene, Harihar had no choice but to lead his wife and children away from their hometown in search of a new livelihood, leaving only Durga to rest here.
