Graduate student Jiang Haixin from the Academy of Fine Arts accompanies her grandmother Aisin Gioro De Yu to sketch at Tanzhe Temple in the western suburbs of Beijing. Under the tall Emperor tree, her grandmother narrates the legendary love story between her grandfather Aisin Gioro Puyuan and grandmother Yuna. In the winter of 1890, the beautiful young Mongolian princess Yuna is teased by a group of idle princes on her way to Tanzhe Temple. Puyuan, who has just returned from Europe with an official tasked with buying guns and ships, sees the injustice and angrily pulls out his gun. Under the tall Emperor tree, Puyuan and Yuna fall in love at first sight, disregarding their attendants' objections and pledging their lives to each other—a short gun and a dragon pendant become their tokens of love. Their shocking actions create a stir in the capital. The old prince wants to bind Puyuan and send him to the ancestral mansion for punishment. Yuna pleads desperately, and finally, Puyuan's grandmother, who has high hopes for him, discovers the dragon pendant and finds out that Yuna is actually a descendant of her close cousin. Thus, she personally presides over a grand wedding ceremony for Puyuan and Yuna at the prince's mansion in the flower-filled alley near Houhai. At the beginning of 1894, the Forbidden City is bustling with preparations for Empress Dowager Cixi's sixtieth birthday while completely ignoring the looming threat of Japanese militarism. Puyuan, calling for help, is exiled to the navy government office on Liugong Island. In the year of Jiawu, the situation changes suddenly as the Japanese Combined Fleet launches a surprise attack on the Qing navy, leading the Qing Empire to write one failure after another in the face of crisis. Japanese troops land on Dalian Beach, the defending troops flee, and the Japanese capture the "first fortress in the Far East," Port Arthur, mercilessly slaughtering tens of thousands of innocent civilians, leaving bodies in the streets and restless souls. At this critical moment, Empress Dowager Cixi is still celebrating her birthday in the Forbidden City, unaware of the foreign invasion. Puyuan witnesses the soldiers of the Beiyang Navy, who fought alongside him, either dead or wounded, filled with grief and anger. After the fall of Liugong Island, the Japanese dismantle the Beiyang navy ships, removing the Qing dragon flags and replacing them with the Japanese flag. Ding Ruchang commits suicide, and Yang Yonglin, the nursing officer of the "Zhenyuan" ship, in despair, fires the last bullet of the Beiyang Navy into his own head, taking his own life, and Liugong Island is engulfed in overwhelming sorrow. The Beiyang Navy disappears in the Jiawu War. After the war, the aged Li Hongzhang, in despair, travels across the sea to negotiate arduously with Ito Hirobumi. Returning to the capital, Puyuan, facing the court's blame on the Beiyang Navy, in anger throws away the "Batulu" sash awarded by the Qing, scolding the ministers of the Grand Council and the officials of the Ministry of Revenue for being skilled at internal strife while incompetent in external battles, which truly is the root cause of the Jiawu disaster. After being ostracized, Puyuan drowns his sorrows in alcohol, while Yuna advises him to go out and lay low. Back at Weihaiwei, Puyuan comes to the aid of a boy named Xiaohai who is being mocked and attacked by other children. When he learns that Xiaohai's father was a heroic engineer who died on the warship, he can no longer contain his anger and sorrow. Puyuan shares his story with Xiaohai, gives him the dragon pendant he carries, and tells him that his father is a true hero, and he must grow up to be a man who can stand tall and guard the deep blue sea in front of their home. Puyuan goes missing and never returns to the capital. Young Yuna never remarries, struggling to survive as a widow in chaotic times. After hearing her grandmother’s story, Jiang Haixin decides to follow the route of the Jiawu War to trace Puyuan’s footsteps, painting Puyuan’s national dream from 120 years ago and the mournful thoughts of Jiawu from 120 years later. On her sketching journey, Jiang Haixin meets a young and handsome navy special operations team leader, unexpectedly discovers the legendary dragon pendant, finds the descendants of Xiaohai, uncovers the secret of Puyuan’s disappearance, and along the way, gains a pure love…
