Emperor Tongzhi is gravely ill. Li Lianying (played by Jiang Wen) strongly recommends Empress Cixi (played by Liu Xiaoqing) to govern again from behind the curtain. Soon after, Emperor Tongzhi passes away, and Cixi installs Zaitian as emperor, continuing to control the court. In 1882, Li Lianying accompanies Prince Chun to inspect the Beiyang Navy. Upon returning to Beijing, he is reprimanded by the Censorate and dismissed from his position. However, under Cixi's influence, Li Lianying is reinstated as the Grand Eunuch of the palace. To ensure a good future for his niece, he brings her into the palace, only for her to end up as a servant, filling him with guilt.
