In 1936 Shanghai, Xu Jifa, an adopted child, is a detective tasked with investigating a fall case. Just when he faces dire straits while being framed, he unexpectedly encounters his long-lost biological mother and younger brother. He discovers that his background is tied to a gold robbery case from 15 years ago, and that the culprits are the same group behind the fall case. His younger brother, Lin Yichen, has also been mistakenly identified as the one who killed Xu Jifa. To solve the case and seek revenge, Xu Jifa disguises himself as his brother and continues the investigation. After enduring many hardships, Xu Jifa finally brings all the criminals to justice. Throughout his quest for truth, Xu Jifa witnesses the corruption and darkness of the Nationalist government, and he realizes that the tragedy he faces is a result of the corruption within society. He begins to embrace new ideas, evolving from a focus on personal grievances to concern for the nation's future. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, Xu Jifa resolutely embarks on a path to seek the light.
