In 1942, in a small town in occupied Slovakia, the Germans are overseeing the construction of a massive wooden monument, but the local carpenter Toni (played by Jozef Króner) is not concerned; his wife's nagging has already annoyed him enough. After Toni's sister marries an officer, her life improves significantly, and Toni, using his brother-in-law's influence, receives a document granting him ownership of a Jewish shop on the street. The owner is a 78-year-old Jewish widow, Lautmann (played by Ida Kaminska), who is hard of hearing and visually impaired. As Toni becomes entangled with her, he discovers that the shop is just an empty shell, with little inventory left. However, taking care of Lautmann can earn him rewards from the Jewish organization, so Toni secretly works in the shop while claiming to be the manager to the outside world. Soon, the Germans begin to arrest Jews and transport them to concentration camps. Toni wants to hide Lautmann, but he is tormented internally. Outside the shop, Jews gather to depart under the monument, while inside, Toni turns to alcohol to soothe his troubles in the face of the confused old woman... The film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1966.
