In the 1990s, in a small city in Northeast China, a young worker named Guan Jian (played by Tuo Zonghua) reports his mother as a murderer to the police, unveiling a long-buried past. In a freezing northeastern village, Guan Jian’s mother (played by Siqin Gaowa) makes and sells tofu, while his father (played by Ma Jingwu) is the principal of a local elementary school, appearing stern and just, but being abusive towards his wife and son at home. The hardworking and submissive mother meets Liu Dagui (played by Wei Zi), a worker from a logging camp, in an accidental encounter. As Liu Dagui and the mother slowly get to know each other, she experiences the care from a man that she cannot receive from her husband, and they become lovers. The secret cannot be kept forever; their relationship becomes the talk of the town. When principal Guan notices, he escalates his abuse towards the mother, leading her to develop murderous thoughts. She poisons her husband’s food, which is witnessed by Guan Jian. Although the irritable father dies, Guan Jian feels a sense of relief to some extent, yet the image of the poisoning lingers in his mind, preventing him from accepting his mother’s remarriage. After nearly ten years of internal struggle, he finally decides to sue his mother…
