In the midsummer of 1949, Shuping, the maid of a rich businessman from Minnan, married and moved to an offshore island. She had yet to meet her husband, Jinshui, who along with the other men on the island had been captured by the Kuomintang army and taken to Taiwan. Together with other women on the island who had lost their husbands, Shuping vowed to devote her life to serving her in-laws and to keep a home for her husband. In 1966, the women on the island began to receive letters from their husbands, who had been sent to Taiwan through difficult channels. Cai Guofu fabricated the news of the death of Fengfang's husband, Yongchun, and successfully brought Fengfang back; upon hearing this, Yongchun was heartbroken and, along with his wife Qiujuan, transitioned from a fake couple to a true couple. Finally, one day she received an elderly man with leg disabilities, and after both presented their tokens of affection, they recognized each other.
