Ellis (Dennis Quaid) is a businessman with a very dark past. His father, Roy (James Caan), is a murderer who committed a brutal family massacre. The shadow cast by his father haunted Ellis into adulthood. Later, on a journey, Ellis encounters a woman named Davis (Meg Ryan). Davis is gentle and kind, and her presence saves Ellis from his chaotic life. Soon, the two fall in love and become a couple. In fact, Davis also has a tragic past; all her family members were murdered, making her the only survivor. Ellis's terrible premonition is confirmed: the one who killed Davis's family is none other than his own father.
