David (played by Nicolas Cage) is a weather forecaster, but he lacks the professional knowledge to apply in his job. When the forecast is not ideal, audiences throw garbage at him on the street. David feels gloomy about his life, and his divorce from his wife (played by Hope Davis) is another blow to him. Now he has an opportunity to work in New York again, but he must face his strained relationship with his children. His son Mike was sexually harassed by a counselor he met during rehab; his daughter Shirley is ridiculed by classmates for her weight and has a pessimistic personality. What saddens David even more is that his novelist father Robert (played by Michael Caine) is suffering from a terminal illness. David hopes his father can see his success, and he wants to reconcile with his ex-wife to start a new life together in New York.
