In 17th century France, the music master Sandre Colomb (played by Jean-Pierre Marielle) is deeply engulfed in the pain of losing his wife. He retreats with his two daughters from the hustle and bustle of life, living a secluded existence. Every time he plays the viola, the beautiful image of his wife appears before him. The handsome and talented young man Malès (played by Guillaume Depardieu and Gérard Depardieu) apprentices under Colomb to learn music. Proud and ambitious, he dismisses his master's teachings, determined to rise to fame among the renowned violinists of Versailles. This leads to a rift between the master and apprentice, while Colomb's eldest daughter Madeleine (played by Anne Brochet) follows her lover Malès. Caught up in a world of indulgence and materialism, Malès gradually loses his true self, and his love with Madeleine shatters. The piece he once wrote for her, "The Girl in My Dreams," becomes a painful memory... The film won seven awards at the 1992 César Awards, including Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Original Score, Best Sound, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress (Anne Brochet), and Best Film.
