Francois (played by Gregory Peck) is a devout Christian and a young missionary. Driven by a sense of responsibility and mission, he traveled thousands of miles alone to China, determined to sow the seeds of Christianity in this foreign land. However, the process turned out to be much more difficult than he imagined. Faced with a group of Chinese people who spoke a different language and had never been exposed to Christian culture, Francois felt powerless. Yet, he did not give up. Amidst poverty, disease, and hostility, he fell down time and again, only to rise once more. After several years, he gained a group of followers behind him. Through his perseverance and effort, he finally opened up a virgin land for Christianity in China.
