In the 1940s, just before the end of the civil war, Taiwanese doctor Yan Zekun (played by Takeshi Kaneshiro) frequently traveled on the "Taiping Jun," a cruise ship from Taiwan to the mainland, to purchase medicine. To maintain his family's livelihood, he appears calm on the surface, but deep down, he constantly misses his lover Yako (played by Masami Nagasawa), who has been forcibly separated from him due to the war. His brother Yan Zeming (played by Yang Youning) is determined to go to the mainland to start a revolution, leaving their struggling family in turmoil. Yan Zekun unexpectedly encounters General Lei Yifang's (played by Huang Xiaoming) wife (played by Song Hye-kyo), while Lei's messenger, Tong Daqing (played by Tong Dawei), harbors feelings for a working-class woman named Yu Zhen (played by Zhang Ziyi). Along with a sergeant (played by Wang Qianyuan) and another lady (played by Yu Feihong), they all come together on the last "Taiping Jun" heading to Taiwan, writing a tale of the joys and sorrows during a time of war. As the gears of fate turn, what will become of these small characters amid a grand era?
