Nick Flynn (Paul Dano) is a young writer who has long forgotten what his father looks like, having grown up with his single mother Judy (Julianne Moore). One day, he receives a call from Jonathan (Robert De Niro), who claims to be his father and has been thrown out by his landlord, asking to borrow Nick's car to move.
