One day, he receives a call from Jonathan (Robert De Niro), who claims to be his father and has been thrown out by his landlord, asking to borrow Nick's car to move. Suddenly, he has an estranged dad who is also a down-and-out writer and shows up with all his luggage, causing Nick great embarrassment in front of his roommate. After spending a night at a homeless shelter, where Nick works, Jonathan decides to avoid making things awkward, and from then on, he can only hang around the station or empty construction sites, comforting himself that he is gathering material for his next great novel. After hearing about his father's dire situation, Nick finally decides to bring him back, but at this point, he doesn’t even know if his father is still alive...
