It tells the story of several young farmers venturing into the big city. These young people neither endure hardships to become successful bosses nor suffer bullying in the city to the point of despair; rather, it depicts a very realistic “simple life.” According to director Wu Fei, it differs from the individual successful farmer images like Liu Laogen and Ma Dashuai: “The challenge of farmer-themed stories lies in their authenticity. Zhao Benshan’s ‘Liu Laogen’ and ‘Ma Dashuai’ represent some successful farmer images, but most farmers live very ordinary lives. ‘I Am a Farmer’ focuses on portraying young people from rural areas coming to the city. I do not want to prescribe solutions for them; they are part of the tens of millions of marginalized individuals entering cities each year. Their lives are dramatic enough without embellishment.” Wu Fei dares to say this because he himself comes from a farming background. To help young actors gain a sensory understanding, he even took several actors to experience farming life. Wu Fei feels this is also part of the sincerity, stating, “Our creative perspective is at eye level, or friend-like, rather than looking down from above. We want to write about this group of people coming from rural areas, wanting to take root in the city, in a way that shows friendship and equal concern.”
