Joseph, a hot-tempered man (played by Peter Mullan), comes from a fractured family and leads a chaotic, self-destructive life. While causing trouble everywhere, he inadvertently stumbles into a clothing store and meets the owner, Hannah (played by Olivia Colman). Hannah is a devout Catholic living in an upscale neighborhood with a seemingly perfect husband, but the fact that she cannot have children weighs heavily on her. Joseph senses a kindred spirit in Hannah, and it turns out her life is not as peaceful as it appears; her seemingly perfect husband is actually a terrible abuser who beats her. One day, after enduring another round of brutal treatment, Hannah, bruised and battered, seeks out Joseph and tells him she has decided to leave her husband, hoping that Joseph will take her in as she has no one else. This decision stirs memories of Joseph's late wife, and he agrees to help Hannah pack her things. Joseph enters Hannah's home with her keys, but the scene that unfolds before him leaves him stunned. Unjust violence looms over the neighborhood like a Tyrannosaurus.
