This film depicts the story of a hot-tempered blind Captain Fausto who, accompanied by his aide Ciccio, travels from Turin to Naples. Officially, the captain is going to see a military friend who was disfigured in a military operation. In reality, the captain intends to commit suicide there. Fausto does not want others to pity him. While passing through Rome, he calls a priest for a prayer. He asks Ciccio to find beautiful women for him. Fausto is dissatisfied with Ciccio's descriptions; he wants to use his nose to smell and identify women. He also carries a photo of his past lover, Sara, as he cannot bear to meet her in his current state. As he is about to commit suicide, Sara appears before him, and Ciccio gains many insights about life from this journey.
