The story takes place in Normandy in 1819, where a young woman named Jeanne (Judith Chemla) returns home filled with hopes and dreams after finishing her time in a convent. There, she meets a young man named Julien (Judith Chemla), and they quickly decide to embark on the journey of marriage together. However, their newlywed happiness is short-lived as Jeanne soon discovers that Julien is, in fact, a hypocritical and callous libertine. He is not only very rough and indifferent towards Jeanne but also has an affair with her best friend. Julien completely shatters Jeanne's illusions of family and commitment; ultimately, he pays a painful price for his actions, but his death does not soothe Jeanne's wounded heart, as for her, one nightmare ends but another begins.
