The stunning and seductive stripper Angela (played by Anna Karina) has been living with her boyfriend Émile (played by Jean-Claude Brialy) for a long time. Angela desperately wants a child to be with Émile forever, but Émile enjoys the freedom of their two-person world and does not want to get married, let alone have children, leading to inevitable arguments. After being repeatedly rejected by Émile, Angela, in a fit of anger, turns to Émile's friend Alfred (played by Jean-Paul Belmondo) and has a relationship with him. Directed and written by Jean-Luc Godard, one of the founders of the French New Wave, the colorful widescreen film "A Woman Is a Woman" is his homage to Hollywood musicals. The film subverts traditional musical formats, being described as a "new realism musical." It won two awards at the 11th Berlin International Film Festival in 1961: Best Actress and a Special Award, and was nominated for the Golden Bear.
