At the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, two Marines, Dawson and Downey, are accused of killing another soldier, Santiago. Navy lawyer Daniel Kaffee (played by Tom Cruise) and his assistant Sam are assigned to take over the case. They uncover that Santiago had wanted to leave the base and had reported Dawson. Kaffee initially hopes for an out-of-court settlement aiming for a two-year sentence. However, the two soldiers insist on their innocence, claiming that their actions against Santiago were in accordance with the superior's "Code Red." This "Code Red" is a form of punishment that is unofficially tolerated by officers and carried out privately by soldiers. Kaffee, Sam, and another lawyer, Galloway (played by Demi Moore), form the defense team to investigate, while Colonel Jessep (played by Jack Nicholson), the base commander, is a key figure in the case. He denied Santiago's request to be reassigned and ordered the "Code Red," later tampering with flight logs. Although Kaffee knows the truth, he struggles with insufficient evidence, and pointing fingers at Colonel Jessep could lead to trouble for himself. What will be the outcome of this litigation concerning justice?
