The story takes place in the capital city of Chang'an during the peak of the Tang Dynasty. Bai Letian (played by Huang Xuan) was once a high-ranking official in the court but willingly chose to be demoted to a lowly position as a keeper of the imperial library to gather material for poetry. Strange death incidents continue to occur in Chang'an, and even the current emperor falls victim to an inexplicable death, all related to a mysterious demon cat. Japanese monk Kūkai (played by Shōta Sometani) originally traveled across the ocean to break a curse for the emperor, but he connects with Bai Letian, and the two decide to join forces to uncover the truth behind the cases.
A mournful rendition of "Qingping Melody" suggests a deep connection between the demon cat's mischief and the death of the enchanting Yang Guifei (played by Zhang Rongrong) thirty years ago. Following the diary left by Abe no Nakamaro (played by Hiroshi Abe), who was once infatuated with Yang Guifei, Bai Letian and Kūkai witness the former glory of the Tang Dynasty while also unraveling the long-concealed conspiracy of that time.
