Hero of Loyalty and Righteousness Wu Erlang Wu Song (played by Wang Wei) returns to his hometown Qinghe County after studying martial arts at Shaolin Temple for eight years. On his way home, he saves the younger sister of Ximen Qing from Yanggu County—Ximen Rulan (played by Gao Haiyan). Ximen Rulan falls in love with Wu Song at first sight, but Wu Song ends up making an enemy of the local bully Li Wu because of her. After reuniting with his brother, Wu Song takes a job as a guard at Zhang Yuanwai's house, where he meets Pan Jinlian (played by Fu Yiwei). Pan Jinlian is a maid at Zhang Yuanwai’s residence and is beautiful, leading Zhang Yuanwai to try to force himself on her. Unable to tolerate this, Wu Song knocks Zhang Yuanwai unconscious, thinking he has killed him, and flees from Qinghe County. To take revenge on Wu Song and Pan Jinlian, Zhang Yuanwai marries Pan Jinlian off to Wu Dalang. Wu Dalang and Pan Jinlian are unable to stay in Qinghe County due to the disgrace and are forced to move to the neighboring Yanggu County. By chance, Wu Song, who has been wandering outside, learns that Zhang Yuanwai is not dead and eagerly rushes home. Passing through Yanggu County's Jingyang Ridge, he kills a tiger that has been terrorizing the area. The county magistrate, impressed with Wu Song’s bravery, keeps him in Yanggu as a captain. The two brothers, Wu Dalang and Wu Song, reunite in Yanggu. When Pan Jinlian sees Wu Song, she is left speechless in sorrow. Ximen Rulan secretly falls in love with Wu Song and frequently seeks him out, which causes jealousy in Pan Jinlian. Unable to restrain herself and disregarding her status as a sister-in-law, Pan Jinlian confesses her feelings to Wu Song, who rejects her, leaving Pan Jinlian embarrassed. Ximen Qing (played by Zhang Zijian) has a falling out with businesswoman Guihua and secretly poisons and kills both Guihua and the merchant Qin. Wu Song is determined to pursue this matter to the end. Fearing for his life due to Wu Song's threat, Ximen Qing decides to eliminate Wu Song. The magistrate of Yanggu County sends Wu Song to escort private silver back home, and Ximen Rulan insists on following her brother, determined to accompany Wu Song. Ximen Qing sends people to steal the silver, preventing Wu Song from returning to Yanggu as planned. In Yanggu, Pan Jinlian inadvertently strikes Ximen Qing, catching his interest. Pan Jinlian falls into a trap set by Ximen Qing and Wang Po, and they begin an affair. Wu Dalang, upon discovering this, goes to catch them in the act but ends up getting injured by Ximen Qing. Encouraged by Ximen Qing, Pan Jinlian poisons Wu Dalang. When Wu Song returns to Yanggu and finds his brother dead under mysterious circumstances, he investigates and discovers the true murderer is Ximen Qing. After killing Pan Jinlian, Wu Song goes to the Lion Tower to find Ximen Qing. The two engage in a brutal fight, and Wu Song kills Ximen Qing. Wu Song is sentenced to death, and Rulan, devastated by the loss of her brother, cannot bear to lose her beloved. She creates a scene at the execution ground, exposing her brother's crimes, which leads to Wu Song’s escape and a three-year exile to Mengzhou. Rulan decides to follow Wu Song to Mengzhou. Throughout the journey, the shadow of Ximen Qing haunts Rulan, while Wu Dalang's image continually flashes before Wu Song, depicting their poignant connection. Li Wu pursues Wu Song relentlessly. At the Xizipo Hotel, Wu Song meets Sun Erniang and Zhang Qing. To distract Li Wu, Rulan leaves Wu Song and is left to face the flying centipede sent by Li Wu, forcing her to jump off a cliff. In Mengzhou prison, Wu Song is treated well by Shi En. Wu Song defeats Jiang Men Shen in a fight arranged by Shi En, reclaiming the Happy Forest. Jiang Men Shen seeks his ally Zhang Doujian, who agrees to help him kill Wu Song. Zhang Doujian invites Wu Song to his office as an instructor, plotting to secretly harm him. Rulan, having survived the jump, is rescued by Zhang Doujian's wife and adopted as her goddaughter. After a life-and-death separation, Wu Song and Rulan reunite at Zhang Doujian's residence, filled with emotion. Zhang Doujian arranges a marriage for Wu Song and Rulan, leading Wu Song to let his guard down and fall into Zhang Doujian's trap, getting imprisoned. To save Wu Song, Rulan agrees to marry Zhang Doujian's nephew, Zhang Tuanlian. Wu Song's death sentence is commuted, and he is expelled. On his way past the supervisory office, he sees Rulan getting married and becomes despondent. Zhang Doujian sends people to kill Wu Song at Feiyunpu. Wu Song kills the assassin sent after him and returns to Zhang Doujian's residence, drenched in blood, killing both Zhang Doujian and Jiang Men Shen. Rulan is rescued by Sun Erniang and Zhang Qing, and they meet Wu Song again at Xizipo. The two young lovers vow never to part again. To escape from the official pursuit, Wu Song and the others flee to Erlong Mountain, where they encounter the demonic flying centipede. After a bloody battle, Wu Song finally eliminates the flying centipede, but Rulan dies in the arms of her beloved...
