Tong Lishi (Liang Ming) lost her husband early on and lives a dependent life with her daughter, Daxiang (Li Meng). The lonely mother and daughter move to the city to seek refuge with their aunt, Aunt Sun (Tian Tai Xuan), and meet a man named Shang Youlin (Li Wei). The kind Shang Youlin often helps the struggling Tong Lishi, and over time, genuine feelings develop between them. The greedy and sinister Aunt Sun conspires with the couple Cui Huzi (Cui Chaoming) and Yanzhi Hu (Li Lingyun) to sell Daxiang to the brothel they run, and Daxiang becomes a prostitute. Seeing her daughter suffer inhuman treatment, a desperate Tong Lishi chooses to commit suicide by jumping into a river. However, Shang Youlin does not give up hope and tries every means to redeem Daxiang, ultimately failing. In 1949, with the liberation of Beiping, the arrival of the People's Liberation Army finally grants Daxiang her freedom.
