A family in New Delhi, India is preparing for the wedding of their daughter Aditi (played by Vasundhara Das). Her father, Lalit (played by Naseeruddin Shah), has chosen a wealthy young man, Hemant, who has returned from studying in the United States, as her groom. However, Aditi is not happy, as she has a lover who is a married television host. So, while she prepares for the wedding under her parents' urging, she also secretly dates her beloved... The wedding changes the fates of many people: wedding designer Dubey unexpectedly falls in love with maid Alice; Aditi's cousin gets involved with a student from Australia; and Aditi's uncle Tej offers to sponsor her cousin Lila's study abroad. However, Lila is not grateful and strongly opposes her daughter spending time with Tej, as she hides a painful past... This film won the Golden Lion for Best Film at the 58th Venice Film Festival.
