During the Cultural Revolution, a veteran sent-down youth, Lao Gan (played by Xie Yuan), who had spent seven years in the countryside, is assigned to a makeshift elementary school in the mountainous regions of Yunnan and Guizhou to be a teacher. His fellow sent-down youth happily call him "The King of Children." However, the school faces a severe shortage of teachers and teaching materials, and he is surprisingly assigned to teach the third year of junior high. Lao Gan is frustrated by the plethora of political study materials and the endless critical articles, while the children cannot even recognize the new characters in their elementary textbooks. He feels deeply and must start from scratch. A few months later, Lao Gan has developed a good relationship with his students, particularly a poor student named Wang Fu, who desperately wants the dictionary that Lao Gan possesses. During a writing assignment, he bets the dictionary, hoping to write about the labor of the next day. However, Wang Fu loses, and without the dictionary, he resolves to copy it entirely. In the end, Lao Gan is reassigned back to his original team. Before leaving, he gives his only dictionary to Wang Fu…
