The story takes place in ancient Thebes, where King Oedipus killed his father and married his mother, resulting in two sons—Eteocles and Polynices—and two daughters—Antigone (played by Irene Papas) and Ismene. Polynices returns home with the help of his father-in-law's army to contest the throne with his brother Eteocles, leading to their mutual destruction. Creon ascends to the throne as the uncle, giving a grand funeral for Eteocles and declaring Polynices a traitor, forbidding anyone to bury his body. Creon orders death for anyone who buries Polynices. Antigone, following divine law and fulfilling her familial duty, buries her brother, leading to her being sentenced to death by Creon. Subsequently, the prophet of Thebes informs Creon that he has offended the gods. Creon rushes to save Antigone, only to find that she has already died. Creon's son Haemon, Antigone's fiancé, draws his sword to kill Creon and then takes his own life. Creon's wife, upon hearing of her son's death, also commits suicide. Ultimately, Creon is left in a tragic state of loneliness.
