Friends Zhang Hualin, Lin Qiang, Shu Fan, and Miao Fei, who graduated from the same university and were in the same class, began their journalism careers in the capital. Zhang Hualin's girlfriend, He Qi, was unwilling to be apart from him. Against her parents' objections, she quit her job and came to Beijing to be with him. Moved by her devotion, Hualin was troubled about how to take care of He Qi. With the help of Shu Fan and others, Hualin rented a small place and married He Qi. Soon, He Qi became pregnant. To make a living, Hualin decided to go on freelance jobs with Miao Fei, but He Qi disagreed, leading to their first argument. Hualin and Lin Qiang were sent by their newspaper to cover a disaster area. Together, they exposed a typical case of embezzlement of poverty alleviation funds and false pretenses. As a result, Hualin was injured. Hualin faced a series of misfortunes, including accidental gas poisoning. Although his life was saved, He Qi lost their child. Deeply affected, Hualin began to sink into depression and unexpectedly quit his job at the newspaper to start a business. Shu Fan was a key employee at a television station. He performed well at work but was laid-back and careless in life. He treated absurd matters seriously while handling real matters absurdly, leaving people amused and exasperated. Seeing Hualin succeed in business, he impulsively registered an advertising company but fell victim to a scam, losing both money and resources and almost ended up in a detention center. From then on, he focused and corrected his course of action. His business progressed rapidly, but his personal life remained chaotic. He ignored the female host Lin Xu in his arms, keeping a distance, while becoming infatuated with Hualin's wife, He Qi, pursuing her with gentlemanly devotion. This led him to a morally ambiguous, awkward, and painful situation. Hualin successfully executed a marketing plan for a water purifier company, Feida, bringing enormous economic benefits to the company, which earned him the recognition of his boss, Gu Zhiguang. To expand his influence and maintain his footing, Hualin forcefully brought Lin Qiang into the partnership. However, he fell into a trap set by the old guard of Feida, Lu Jun, and Gu Zhiguang caught him accepting kickbacks. Unwilling to accept betrayal, Zhang Hualin resolved to confront Gu Zhiguang. However, at a critical moment, Lin Qiang took Gu Zhiguang's side. The once-close friends Zhang Hualin and Lin Qiang became foes. Hualin refused Lin Qiang's explanations and angrily left Feida against his friends’ advice, establishing his own company, Hengtai. Just as Hualin was seeing business success, he encountered the old rival Lu Jun. Lin Qiang stepped forward to expose Lu Jun's true nature. Enraged, Zhang Hualin sought vengeance, not realizing he was putting Lu Jun in a deadly situation. Hualin's actions sparked discontent among friends, but he was no longer the person he used to be; he was stubborn and unscrupulous. He Qi was immensely disappointed in him, and their marriage flickered with warning signs. Shu Fan's investigative news segment became the station's signature program, gaining audience popularity. One day, he received a complaint about a company in Beijing involving fraud. Shu Fan decided to investigate personally. He Qi, knowing this was connected to Hualin, wanted to dissuade Shu Fan and reveal the truth. However, Shu Fan left without any notice and boarded a train west that night. In desperation, He Qi went to find Hualin, with whom she had been separated. Hualin treated her with indifference. In a fit of anger, He Qi finally exploded. Under her questioning and accusations, Hualin began to reflect and realize his mistakes. He decided to personally rectify the situation and make amends for the losses. But just then, the devastating news arrived that Shu Fan had died in a car accident while on assignment… Shu Fan's death shocked Hualin and nearly broke him. At Shu Fan's funeral, old friends Zhang Hualin, Lin Qiang, Miao Fei, and He Qi faced their deceased friend, shaken to their core and in profound pain, subjecting their souls to a harsh self-interrogation: once, they were poor in terms of material wealth but rich in friendship, ideals, and love; now, they were wealthy in money but had nothing else. Money can be regained; friends, once lost, cannot be retrieved...
