Since the Qing Yongzheng era, the Le family’s old shop, Tongrentang, has been designated as "Imperial Medicine Provider," and by the eighth generation of the Le family, it has gained immense fame. Families of the sick have sought its remedies, while the Japanese ronin, Ono, colluded with Cao Hualun, who grew up in the Le family, to plot to steal the secret formula. Cao Hualun’s theft was discovered by the old shop's owner, Le Hongda, who confronted him. In the ensuing conflict, Cao set fire to the Le family’s pharmacy warehouse, destroying it; he also colluded with the imperial pharmacy eunuch to seize imperial medicine funds, causing the old shop further troubles, leaving them without money to produce medicine or sell it. The prince mistakenly believed that the Le family was "hoarding" and, in anger, ordered the revocation of their imperial medicine provider status, calling for new bids. Facing internal and external crises, the elderly Le Hongda, determined to preserve the 200-year-old brand, decisively passed down the family seal to his grandson, Le Hongda. Le Hongda was entrusted with a grave responsibility, and with the help of his wife, Xu Ruizhen, he skillfully restored the imperial medicine provider status, receiving a plaque from Emperor Guangxu. Cao Hualun again incited the prince to order the shop not to sell medicine to the public, only to the palace. Le Hongda realized that "advancing means becoming a good minister, retreating means becoming a good doctor," and he "defied orders" to sell medicine. Le Hongda supported his grandson, leveraging the illness of Grand Coordinator Li Lianying to create a miraculous medicine. The Empress Dowager finally lifted the ban. Cong Yuzhu, a female performer taken in by the Le family, secretly loved Le Hongda but sacrificed herself by marrying Cao Hualun in an attempt to rescue Le Hongda from prison. During the First Sino-Japanese War, the Qing army went to Korea to fight. Le Hongda hurriedly produced 100,000 packs of "Zhuge's Military Powder" to gift to the soldiers but fell into debt due to price hikes from medicine merchants. As the year-end debt collectors pressured him, Le Hongda found no way to borrow, and in anger, sold his ancestral home. Upon learning the reason for the donated medicine, the merchants generously relinquished their debts. The old shop once again found a way to survive. The father of the maid Lanxiang, Hu Qi, narrowly escaped death but was falsely accused and hunted. The Le family sheltered Hu Qi, but he was betrayed by Cao Hualun. Le Hongda took in Lanxiang as his god-granddaughter. At Xu Ruizhen's urging, Lanxiang married Le Hongda. The Eight-Nation Alliance bombarded Dashilan, and the old shop's hall was set ablaze. Le Hongda ordered Le Hongda and Xu Ruizhen to accompany the pregnant Lanxiang to escape the city, ensuring that the Le family’s lineage continued. Ono led Japanese soldiers into the Le family to search for the secret formula, and Le Hongda responded with poisoned wine, killing them both in a mutual destruction. Le Hongda returned secretly to the city, distressed beyond measure. He found his grandfather's treasured secret formula and hid it in his coffin. Suspecting something, Cao Hualun opened the coffin at night; Xu Ruizhen and the god-performer Xiang Jiuxiao devised a plan that scared Cao to death. The old shop reopened from the ruins, but Le Hongda, having suffered greatly, passed away. In his last moments, his son, Le Tongren, was celebrating his first birthday. Surrounded by an array of official hats, gold ingots, and silk, the little Tongren grabbed the "Tongrentang Medicine Manual"...
