In the late years of the Ming Dynasty during the reign of Emperor Tianqi, the court secretly hid a coup. The ailing Emperor Tianqi was on the brink of death but had no sons to succeed him, the only blood relation being his younger brother Zhu Youjian. The Grand Eunuch Wei Zhongxian conspired to use a palace maid's baby to impersonate the crown prince, ensuring the prosperity of the eunuch faction. Unfortunately, the maid gave birth to a baby girl instead. Meanwhile, Zhu Youjian, who had been expelled from the capital, was captured by the Jinyiwei (Embroidered Uniform Guard) and brought back, believing he would be executed. To his surprise, he ascended the throne as Emperor Chongzhen. The maid escaped to Yangzhou with her baby, naming her Chen Yuanyuan. Chen Yuanyuan was sold three times in one day and ended up learning her craft in a brothel. As she matured, she became a renowned courtesan. After Chongzhen ascended to the throne, he vowed to restore the Ming Dynasty. However, the court faced both internal and external crises. Internally, natural disasters had led to widespread famine, with a peasant army led by Gao Yingxiang and Li Zicheng rising up; externally, the Later Jin rebel forces pressed in from beyond the Great Wall, with Hong Taiji poised to invade. Chongzhen was constantly under immense pressure, striving to save the Ming Dynasty. Chen Yuanyuan was selected by the Grand Eunuch Wang Cheng'en to serve in the palace. She repeatedly resisted Chongzhen's affections but fell in love with Wu Sangui. The central region's peasant army was besieged by the imperial army in Chexi Gorge, facing annihilation. Just when Chongzhen was preparing to deliver a decisive blow, Hong Taiji launched an invasion, approaching the capital. In a moment of urgency, Chongzhen insisted on refusing peace and fought back, managing to repel Hong Taiji. However, the peasant army escaped destruction and regained strength. Chongzhen executed the Jiliao Governor Yuan Chonghuan for his persistence in seeking peace, promoted Wu Sangui to commander of Ningyuan to win his loyalty, and gifted Chen Yuanyuan to him, commanding them to marry. Three days after their wedding, Wu Sangui went north to the border, while Chen Yuanyuan returned to the palace as a hostage. Gao Yingxiang and Li Zicheng captured Fengyang, and Zhang Xianzhong plundered the imperial tombs. When the peasant army celebrated their victories, divisions emerged within their ranks… Upon learning of the destruction of the Fengyang imperial tomb, Chongzhen was heartbroken, refused to eat meat, and donned filial mourning attire to govern. He swiftly mobilized the nation to exterminate the peasant army; Gao Yingxiang was captured, brought to the capital, and executed, while Zhang Xianzhong surrendered to the government, and Li Zicheng succeeded as the new ruler. The Later Jin grew stronger, having completed preparations for invasion. Just before their military campaign, Hong Taiji suffered a stroke and died, leading to a power struggle within the Later Jin court. In the Jinzheng Hall, the prince Dorgon confronted the crown prince Hooge, each leading their factions against one another. In a critical moment, the Empress Dowager, with advice from the surrendered general Hong Chengchou, seized the opportunity to place the young prince Fulin on the throne, known as the Shunzhi Emperor, while Dorgon became the regent, stabilizing the Later Jin. The Empress Dowager, for Fulin's safety and the future of the Later Jin, willingly served Dorgon. Li Zicheng, now the new "Chuang Wang," led the peasant army sweeping across the country, quickly closing in on the capital… Chongzhen refused to move the capital and was determined to defend the city to the end, but by then, the morale of the people had plummeted, and the soldiers lacked fighting spirit; officials scattered like birds and beasts. On the eve of the city's fall, Chongzhen killed his own flesh and blood and committed suicide on Coal Hill. In the aftermath, Chen Yuanyuan saved the three-year-old young prince. After Li Zicheng entered the capital, he established the Dazhong dynasty, crowned himself emperor, and began searching for the young prince while trying hard to win over Wu Sangui stationed at Shanhaiguan. Meanwhile, outside the pass, Dorgon was also persuading Wu Sangui to surrender. Li Zicheng's general Liu Zongmin fell in love with Chen Yuanyuan and forcefully moved into Wu's residence. Wu Sangui finally decided to "belong to Han and not to Yi" and led his troops to surrender to Li Zicheng, but on the way to the capital, he encountered his steward and was shocked to learn that his father had been killed by the rebel army and that his beloved had been seized by Liu Zongmin… Wu Sangui, furious, immediately turned back to Shanhaiguan. At the pass, he encountered the Empress Dowager and Hong Chengchou persuading him to surrender, agreeing to "serve the Qing" and collaborate with Qing forces to eliminate the Dazhong troops, with hopes of restoring the Ming Dynasty. Dorgon, aiming to utilize Wu Sangui, named him King of Pingxi and swore an oath by killing a horse, placing all Eight Banner armies under his command. In the outskirts of the capital, Qing troops combined with Wu Sangui’s cavalry attacked the Dazhong army, resulting in Li Zicheng’s defeat, forcing a hasty retreat from Beijing. Before leaving, Liu Zongmin unwillingly took Chen Yuanyuan away. Wu Sangui triumphed; however, when he sought to enter the capital to reunite with Chen Yuanyuan, he discovered that the city was filled with Eight Banner troops. Dorgon even forbade Wu Sangui from entering to pay respects to Chongzhen and his father, strictly ordering him to continue pursuing the Dazhong army. Wu Sangui could only worship from afar and then immediately led his troops in relentless pursuit of the remaining Dazhong soldiers while searching for Chen Yuanyuan. In the mountains, Wu Sangui fought Liu Zongmin, who was injured. Chen Yuanyuan rushed to stop them, but her pleas fell on deaf ears, and she watched as Wu Sangui killed the kind Liu Zongmin. At that moment, Li Zicheng also perished in battle deep in the mountains, while in the capital, the young Shunzhi was welcomed to the Taihe Hall, marking the Manchu rule over the world. Wu Sangui and Chen Yuanyuan were finally reunited. Firstly, Dorgon’s strategy of "Han exterminating Han" forced Wu Sangui to chase down the remnants of the Ming. On the way, common people everywhere scorned Wu Sangui and Chen Yuanyuan, believing this pair of infatuated lovers to be calamities, blaming them for the downfall of the Ming. Wu Sangui felt immense sorrow and frustration. Next, Dorgon began hunting down "Prince Zhu San" nationwide, while this little prince was nestled in Chen Yuanyuan’s arms, close as siblings… What tortured Wu Sangui the most was that Chen Yuanyuan suddenly became pregnant, leaving Wu Sangui confused about whether the child was his, Chongzhen's, or Liu Zongmin's… even Chen Yuanyuan was unsure. Wu Sangui felt the most profound humiliation as a man! When the Manchu secret envoy came to inspect the barracks for Prince Zhu San, Wu Sangui, to avoid catastrophe, in front of Chen Yuanyuan, violently killed the three-year-old young prince! In his agony, Chen Yuanyuan fainted. At dawn, Wu Sangui ordered to pack up and head south. When he entered Chen Yuanyuan’s tent, he found only a pipa with broken strings, and from then on, Chen Yuanyuan’s whereabouts became unknown… Thus, the events of Chongzhen’s reign, involving the Ming, Qing, and Dazhong, amidst the turmoil of dynastic change, flowed into the river of history...
