Late in his career, Visconti favored the internal conflicts of noble families as his main theme, after all, he was born into a noble family himself. This film belongs to that genre, but it is one of his least known works. His longtime collaborator Lancaster plays a retired American professor living in a luxurious apartment in Rome who collects paintings. The film examines the various situations within a noble family through his perspective. The family has moved into the artist's upstairs, and the household is filled with corruption, hatred, jealousy, and other unknown secrets. The old professor finds himself in irreconcilable conflict with them, leading him into madness and chaos.
