In the later stages of the Anti-Japanese War, in the provisional capital of Chongqing, the freedom-loving Wang Wenxuan (played by Xu Huanshan) disregards his family's objections to live and love with his classmate Zeng Shusheng (played by Pan Hong). After entering society, he realizes the stark difference between ideals and reality, ultimately becoming a down-and-out office worker disgraced and stuck in a mundane life. His wife, Shusheng, is unhappy with their impoverished existence and uses her looks to secure a "flower vase" job at a bank to support the household. Wang's mother (played by Lin Moyu) disapproves of Shusheng's behavior, often scolding her for not being "formally married." The bank's generous salary makes Shusheng reluctant to return to poverty, and she eventually relocates to Lanzhou with her young boss, Director Chen (played by Gao Fei). In this foreign land, Shusheng constantly misses her husband and son in Chongqing. After the victory of the war, she returns from Lanzhou to Chongqing, only to find that Wenxuan has died from a combination of poverty and illness days earlier... This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Ba Jin.
