The story takes place in a religious community in northern Mexico, where the residents are extremely devout believers who strictly follow the Lord's guidance, keeping the doctrines in mind in their every word and action. John (played by Cornelio Wall) and his wife Esther (played by Miriam Toews) are locals who have been married for many years, living happily and peacefully with their family in a picturesque rural area. However, beneath this calm surface, a storm is raging; John has fallen in love with a woman named Marianne (played by Maria Pankratz), and the two often meet secretly to indulge in the pleasures of both spirit and flesh. Their relationship is not limited to mere physicality; John harbors deep love for Marianne, which means that every time he is with her, he is betraying not only secular morals but also the faith he has adhered to all his life, plunging John into profound suffering.
