"Counterattack" is a television series set against the backdrop of the early occupation of Shanghai during the War of Resistance against Japan. The entire series celebrates the heroic feats of the Chinese Communist Party leading the nation in a united fight against invasion. Through a series of thrilling and heart-wrenching stories of small characters under the leadership of the underground Party, it showcases the contest of will, wisdom, and courage, the struggle between justice and evil, and a political confrontation. The spiritual fox, along with the five orphans: Qinglong, Baihu, Zhuque, and Xuanwu, became acquainted with each other and relied on one another from an early age. Qinglong pursued progressive ideas, joined the Communist Party, and united with Wang Yaqiao to oppose Chiang Kai-shek, only to be assassinated by the Military Intelligence Bureau. The spiritual fox, unable to avenge Qinglong, was also hunted by the Military Intelligence Bureau but was saved at a critical moment by Qinglong's comrades and fled overseas. At the end of 1937, as the "Battle of Shanghai" concluded, the Japanese army fully occupied Shanghai. With the nation in peril, the spiritual fox quietly returned to Shanghai and gathered old brothers to join the tide of resistance against Japan. They sabotaged Japanese military warehouses and supply lines, seized Japanese medicine, and fought fiercely against the invaders with their meager strength, while also seeking revenge for their fallen brother Qinglong. On a winter night, Lu Zhanfei, the head of the Military Intelligence Bureau's Shanghai action team, was ordered to relocate a communication station when the Japanese military police suddenly attacked. Both sides engaged in a fierce battle. After Lu Zhanfei and his men wiped out the military police and entered the communication station, he learned that the station chief was a secret agent of the Japanese army, having been abducted by another mysterious group. This brilliant act was orchestrated by the spiritual fox and his subordinates, whose aim was not only to eliminate Japanese spies but also to avenge Qinglong, with the demand for gold bars serving to humiliate the Military Intelligence Bureau. This deeply angered the Shanghai station chief, Zhou Weixiong, who began to take this emerging mysterious force seriously. The spiritual fox used cunning to attack a Japanese military hospital, intercepting a truckload of medicine. Just as the supplies were secured, the Shanghai socialite Luo Biyue, actually a high-level agent of the Military Intelligence Bureau disguised as a wealthy merchant’s daughter, contacted him to arrange a meeting to buy the medicine. After trading with Luo Biyue, the spiritual fox sensed her uniqueness, suggesting an exchange with the Military Intelligence Bureau for Daxizhengping, specifying Zhou Weixiong as the buyer. Luo Biyue immediately guessed the spiritual fox's identity. In fact, her true identity was a member of the underground Communist Party, which highly valued the spiritual fox as a living force for resistance active at the grassroots level, instructing Luo Biyue to fully protect and support him. The exposure of the undercover agent also shocked the Japanese military intelligence in Shanghai. Advisor Deben reprimanded the military police captain Watanabe, demanding a swift investigation into the matter to eliminate anti-Japanese forces in Shanghai and stabilize the Japanese regime. At this time, Japan's Central and North China army was pressuring Xuzhou from the north and south to open up the Jinan-Puhui line. The Chinese army fought desperately, preparing for a larger-scale bloody battle at Taierzhuang, the northeastern gateway of Xuzhou. Just as all troops were in position, ready for battle, Defense Ministry staff member Gu Yeping, due to his notorious escapades, was coerced by Japanese female spy Nakamura Yuko into stealing military operation maps and escaping Wuhan, intending to trade the intelligence for life and money. With the great battle imminent, it was impossible to redeploy the troops. To ensure victory in the Taierzhuang battle and the lives of hundreds of thousands of soldiers, all parties immediately acted to pursue Gu Yeping. Zhou Weixiong believed that the spiritual fox could play a role in capturing Gu Yeping, intending to pacify and utilize him. Thus he feigned compliance with the order to kill the spiritual fox, directing Luo Biyue to meet with him and agreeing to trade gold bars for Daxizhengping, while trying to win the spiritual fox over to his side. The spiritual fox saw through the plot and, at a critical moment, shot and killed Daxizhengping, leading to mutual suspicion and a conflict between Lu Zhanfei and Deben. Subsequently, both the Military Intelligence Bureau and the Japanese military intelligence crazily pursued the spiritual fox, but neither succeeded. In desperation, Zhou Weixiong accepted Luo Biyue's suggestion to reach a reconciliation with the spiritual fox and asked for his assistance in capturing Gu Yeping. The Japanese military also turned its focus back to Gu Yeping and kept a close watch on him, intent on capturing him. However, regardless of how the Japanese intelligence, Military Intelligence Bureau agents, and the spiritual fox entangled and pursued Gu Yeping, he always managed to escape danger. The battle at Taierzhuang had already begun, and capturing Gu Yeping to regain troop deployment and operational strategy had become even more urgent. Eventually, with the assistance of Gu Yeping's cousin, the renowned Peking opera singer Shi Yuqing, and the collaboration of the spiritual fox and Lu Zhanfei, Gu Yeping was ultimately killed, and the confidential military intelligence he carried did not fall into Japanese hands, ensuring the smooth progress of the Taierzhuang battle. Just as the Gu Yeping incident wrapped up, Zhou Weixiong was ordered to try to recruit the spiritual fox with a huge sum of money. After being politely declined and suspecting the spiritual fox's connection with the Communist Party, he became furious and organized a new manhunt. Meanwhile, the Japanese military intelligence launched a new extermination operation against the spiritual fox due to the failure of the Gu Yeping incident. In a short time, the spiritual fox and his brothers found themselves in a perilous situation. The head of the Japanese military intelligence, Harada, returned to Shanghai to assign a new task - to promote the myth of the invincibility of the Japanese army, boosting the morale of the fighting soldiers. The Japanese General Headquarters selected ten so-called "heroic figures" from various battlefields in China, each boasting records of killing over 100 Chinese, to gather in Shanghai for awards and propaganda, before sending them to the frontline in Wuhan to inspire the soldiers preparing for an attack, promoting the samurai spirit. Ensuring the safety of these ten war criminals in Shanghai became the top priority for the Japanese military intelligence. The spiritual fox learned of the news and was enraged, determined to eliminate these Japanese war criminals, but the extermination operation proved exceedingly difficult. The Japanese military intelligence took various measures to offer extensive protection for the war criminals. With Luo Biyue's help, the spiritual fox succeeded in killing the first war criminal, Yamada Shōseki. Influenced by Chiang Kai-shek’s compromise policy, Zhou Weixiong delayed his military actions, unwilling to take action against the war criminals. Meanwhile, Lu Zhanfei, who was envious of the competent, continuously obstructed the spiritual fox, and during the operation against the second war criminal, Kato Yoshimasa, the spiritual fox found himself surrounded by the Japanese military. At this critical moment, the mysterious woman Adi appeared, killed Kato Yoshimasa, and helped the spiritual fox escape from danger. Just as the spiritual fox found himself increasingly isolated and helpless, the craftiest Japanese war criminal, Eagle Forest, appeared, attempting to design a trap to eliminate him, but was ultimately killed by Shi Yuqing, who had awakened to the spirit of resistance. Although Shi Yuqing was eventually killed by Harada, this act completed her transformation from a famous actress to a patriotic figure, illustrating the indomitable spirits of the people and lighting hope for the spiritual fox in the nation's resistance against Japanese invaders. Luo Biyue also deeply realized that the spiritual fox, through the baptism of blood and fire, could transform from a democrat to a revolutionary. According to instructions, Luo Biyue candidly revealed her true identity as a member of the underground Communist Party, with the mysterious woman Adi being her assistant. The conspiracy behind the Japanese prestige award ceremony completely fell apart, and Harada, realizing his unforgivable sins, began to approach the businessman Ono Toshio, who had connections to the royal family. A series of coincidences inadvertently raised Luo Biyue’s suspicions about Ono Toshio's identity. After thorough confirmation, it was revealed that Ono Toshio was indeed an agent plotting the plunder of China's economic resources. The Military Intelligence Bureau felt increasingly uneasy about the spiritual fox's growing strength, wanting to recruit him but lacking confidence in managing this force, and wanting to eliminate him but lacking the resolve. To protect the spiritual fox and others, Luo Biyue, under orders from the Party organization, persuaded the spiritual fox to temporarily join the Military Intelligence Bureau, hoping to deflect their dark hands. However, the proud spiritual fox ultimately could not endure the restrictions, leading Zhou Weixiong to make a decisive move to eliminate him. The clever spiritual fox successfully disrupted Zhou Weixiong’s “Hongmen Banquet,” causing the latter to suffer losses, discouraging him from easily considering eliminating the spiritual fox, leading to a temporary peace between both parties. To promptly confirm the details of the wealth-plundering plan by the Japanese army led by Ono Toshio, the spiritual fox made multiple attempts to approach him, but Ono’s office was heavily guarded and he could not succeed. Consequently, he designed a plan to help the duped secretary Oda Kazuko, who possessed dual identities, see through Ono Toshio’s true sinister nature and, with her assistance, seek a breakthrough. However, the restless Xuanwu acted on his own and broke into Ono Toshio's office at night, falling into a trap set by the Japanese, directly leading to Zhuque's serious injury. Angered, the spiritual fox misunderstood Luo Biyue. At a critical moment, Adi, ordered to secretly protect the spiritual fox, sacrificed her life to cover everyone’s escape, shocking the spiritual fox and ultimately leading him to view Luo Biyue with new respect, gladly teaming up with her to resist Japan. Lu Zhanfei, who had long harbored jealousy toward the spiritual fox, finally found an opportunity to eliminate him by causing Xuanwu to fall into a trap set by the Japanese, resulting in his death. Xuanwu’s demise momentarily shifted the spiritual fox’s focus, turning Lu Zhanfei, the anti-communist, into his primary enemy. Lu Zhanfei, going so far as to ally with the Japanese to eliminate the spiritual fox, was shot by Zhuque as he was about to enter the Zhongguang Hall, dying on the path to becoming a national traitor. Without Lu Zhanfei's obstruction, the progress of the investigation into the Japanese army's wealth-plundering plan significantly accelerated. However, just as they identified the key location where the looted materials were stored, Wang Shaokang and Qingpi, driven by ambition, misstepped and ended up losing the target again, while Oda Kazuko was sacrificed due to her exposed identity. To lure out Ono Toshio, Luo Biyue, risking her life, took the initiative. Eventually, she found Ono Toshio and the Japanese military's golden lily plan supervisor Kawasaki's residence. Under the command of the underground party leader, the spiritual fox devised a plan to mislead the Japanese intelligence into attacking Kawasaki's hideout. The two Japanese military factions, unaware of the situation, fought chaotically while the spiritual fox and his group seized the opportunity to break in, killing Ono Toshio, successfully confiscating the golden lily plan, and sinking the Japanese warship "Yuanjiang" loaded with plundered Chinese wealth in Wusongkou. In the struggle against the enemy, with the help of the Communist Party's education, the spiritual fox completed the transformation from a patriotic nationalist to a revolutionary.
