Nathalie (Isabelle Huppert) is a philosophy teacher who has been married to her husband Hans (André Marcon) for decades. They have raised two children together and live a peaceful and fulfilling life. One day, Hans suddenly confesses to Nathalie that he has taken a lover, and not only that, but he plans to move out and live with her. Although Nathalie pretends to be calm on the surface, she is deeply hurt inside. Nathalie's mother (Edith Scob) was once a famous model, but now she suffers from depression and has attempted suicide multiple times. With no other option, Nathalie is forced to go against her mother's wishes and put her in a nursing home. Meanwhile, Nathalie follows the advice of her former student Fabian (Roman Kolinka) and goes to a commune he has set up in the mountains with his friends.
