The story begins in the 1970s. In a military compound of a certain military region, a group of soldiers' offspring live carefree lives. Zhang Weiping (played by Duan Yihong) is recognized as the bad boy, while his brother Zhang Xiangping (played by Liu Xiaofeng) is the idol of the children. One day, while visiting home, Xiangping abruptly receives a return-to-base order. Inspired by him, Qiao Jianxin (played by Wu Yue) enlists in the military. Unexpectedly, news comes that Xiangping has sacrificed his life on the frontlines in the Vietnam War. Seeking revenge for his brother, Weiping takes improper means to get to the front lines but is subsequently transferred back home by the military and becomes a down-to-earth educated youth. Xiangping is not dead; he returns after earning merit, leaving Jianxin overjoyed. Later, due to political reasons, Xiangping is imprisoned, but Jianxin remains loyal and steadfast.
