The story begins in the early 1980s, in a coastal city in the north. Liu Ru Yan and Wan Shu Lin both work at a state-owned printing and dyeing factory. They have been married for five years and still have no children, which has caused the couple considerable strife. Wan Shu Lin scolds Liu Ru Yan, calling her a "hen that doesn't lay eggs," and even threatens to divorce her to find another woman who can bear children. Liu Ru Yan feels deeply wronged and hurt, and confides in her younger sister. Liu Ru Mei, who works in a hospital, sympathizes with her sister and suggests they undergo tests to determine the cause of their infertility. However, at that time, such tests were not yet commonplace, and Wan Shu Lin, proud and stubborn, refuses to go. Liu Ru Yan has no choice but to try some folk remedies, and it seems to work— she becomes pregnant. Wan Shu Lin is overjoyed and even considers giving up a rare training opportunity to take care of his wife. Liu Ru Yan persuades him to prioritize his work, assuring him that her neighbors and sister can help her. Indeed, when Wan Shu Lin returns from his business trip, he learns that Liu Ru Yan has given birth to a baby girl named Jia Ni. He is disappointed because he had wanted a son. Just at that moment, the government had announced family planning as a national policy, strictly controlling the birth of a second child, extinguishing his hopes for a son completely. Frustrated, he neglects Liu Ru Yan and their daughter, spending his nights playing cards and drinking, and even fooling around with a female worker named He Li Na. Liu Ru Yan can no longer endure this and resolutely leaves him with their daughter. Later, through a recommendation from a neighbor, she meets Bai Shao Xing, an engineer from the motor factory. Upon their first meeting, Liu Ru Yan makes it clear that she does not want to find a stepfather for her daughter; she will only date him if he agrees to raise Jia Ni as his own and not have any more children. Bai Shao Xing readily agrees, but unexpectedly, shortly after they marry, Liu Ru Yan discovers she is pregnant! Bai Shao Xing is from an ethnic minority group, and according to policy, the child can be born. But should she have the baby? Ultimately, encouraged by her husband, she puts aside her worries, moves into the maternity ward, and successfully gives birth to a boy. In the same ward is a woman named Hua Hong Ying, a teacher who has just given birth to a girl. She reveals that she lost her first daughter in the hospital and has to give birth again. Since this is not her first birth, she recovers quickly and takes great care of Liu Ru Yan, adoring Jia Ni. Her husband, Yang Ming Liang, is a cadre from the electromechanical bureau and happens to be Bai Shao Xing's direct superior, so they get along well. However, Liu Ru Yan avoids the couple, leaving Bai Shao Xing confused. He has no idea that Jia Ni, whom he is raising as his daughter, is actually the baby Hua Hong Ying and Yang Ming Liang lost in the hospital! At that time, Liu Ru Yan thought she was pregnant and went to the hospital for a check-up, but the doctor informed her it was a false pregnancy. Liu Ru Yan could hardly bear the blow and, fearing to reveal the truth to her husband, sought help from her sister. Liu Ru Mei advised her to pretend to be pregnant and when the time comes, she should find a baby abandoned by someone else to pass off as her own. However, as the time to "give birth" approached, she could not find a baby. In desperation, during the chaos of feeding, she casually took a child. From the bracelet on the child's wrist, Liu Ru Yan learned the mother's name was Hua Hong Ying. She has kept that bracelet carefully. Now fate has brought them together. Although Hua Hong Ying's family has no idea, they are still warm and welcoming to Liu Ru Yan and her daughter, but how can Liu Ru Yan allow her daughter to get close to this family when she herself feels guilty? Fortunately, the secret buried in her heart has never been revealed. Years passed, and both she and Bai Shao Xing have retired, while their children have grown up. After obtaining her graduate degree, Jia Ni started working at Yang Ming Liang's company and is in a romantic relationship with Hao Ning, Hao Wei Dong’s son. Life is peaceful and pleasant. But one day, Wan Shu Lin, her ex-husband whom she had not heard from in years, suddenly shows up and questions Jia Ni's origins. It turns out that Wan Shu Lin married He Li Na, but they also couldn’t have children, and their marriage ended in divorce. After remarrying, He Li Na quickly had a son, leaving Wan Shu Lin with lingering doubts. Now that Wan Shu Lin knows her new husband has died, he proposes to remarry her, but she insists that he must undergo a fertility test. The results show that Wan Shu Lin is infertile by nature! Therefore, Jia Ni's origins become a critical issue. Clever He Li Na immediately thinks of leveraging this situation to extort Liu Ru Yan and sets a "hush money" price of fifty thousand yuan to both Liu Ru Yan and what they think is her "lover," Hao Wei Dong. Hao Wei Dong is completely baffled and hurriedly contacts Liu Ru Yan. Liu Ru Yan sees that an innocent person has been dragged into this matter, but fearing to reveal Jia Ni’s true origins, she reluctantly agrees to their terms and withdraws fifty thousand yuan from her scant savings to pay He Li Na. Bai Shao Xing notices his wife's unusual emotions and behaviors and learns from their son, Bai Shan, that she has withdrawn money from their savings, but out of trust and love for her, he merely observes without probing further. A storm seems to have calmed down. Unexpectedly, Yang Ming Liang’s daughter, Hua Mei (who is Jia Ni's biological sister), falls deeply in love with Hao Ning, who does not reciprocate her feelings. In her frustration, she drinks and drives, resulting in a severe accident that puts her life in danger. The grandmother, who usually dotes on her granddaughter, suffers another mental breakdown. Hua Hong Ying and Yang Ming Liang are overwhelmed, caring for both the young and the elderly. In this situation, Liu Ru Yan, disregarding her own commitments, mobilizes her family to help the Yang family through this difficult period. Through this interaction, she learns about the pain the Yang family endured after losing their child, and her conscience is deeply shaken. She considers revealing everything but, fearing legal repercussions and the loss of the happiness she has fought so hard to achieve, she hesitates to confess the truth. The Yang couple, in close contact with Liu Ru Yan and her daughter, feel their kindness and the depth of their mother-daughter bond, but they also discover some oddities. Especially when it’s found that Jia Ni has the same rare blood type as Hua Mei, but it does not match either Liu Ru Yan’s or Wan Shu Lin’s blood type, leading them to almost conclude that she is their lost daughter! Yet, they do not want to believe that the kind-hearted Liu Ru Yan could do such a thing, and they surmise that Jia Ni's biological father might be someone else, deciding to remain silent. Under the careful care of Hua Hong Ying and her husband, Hua Mei survives the life-threatening ordeal, but upon learning she can only accompany a wheelchair from now on, she spirals into despair, refusing to eat or undergo treatment. Jia Ni, knowing Hua Mei is in love with Hao Ning, brings him to visit her and secretly tells her that as long as she can recover, she is willing to give up Hao Ning and set him free. Hua Mei regains the courage to live, resumes eating and treatment, and the grandmother's condition also improves and she becomes coherent again. At that moment, due to He Li Na wanting to conceal the hush money, Wan Shu Lin, in a fit of anger, spills the details about his infertility and that Jia Ni was born from Liu Ru Yan and another man. For Bai Shao Xing, this news is like a bolt from the blue; he cannot believe that his beloved wife of many years could do such a thing! He demands Liu Ru Yan clarify the truth, or he will divorce her. Liu Ru Yan does not say a word to him but, after making arrangements, attempts suicide out of guilt. Fortunately, she is rescued. In her farewell letter, the truth is revealed: Jia Ni is the daughter of Yang Ming Liang and Hua Hong Ying, taken from the hospital's nursery, with the bracelet as proof. How should everyone view and treat Liu Ru Yan? This becomes a test for everyone involved. Especially for Liu Jia Ni, how should she treat the woman who raised her for over twenty years but forcefully separated her from her biological parents for over twenty years? For the Yang family, Liu Ru Yan's actions undoubtedly caused them immense pain and indeed violated the law, but after more than twenty years and a profound understanding of Liu Ru Yan, should they still pursue legal action against her? In the hospital room, Liu Ru Yan lies in bed, quietly awaiting her fate. Outside the room, people are sighing, excited, and endlessly debating this matter...
