In 1949, on the eve of the liberation of New China, the Central Committee of the Communist Party made the brilliant decision to send a million troops across the Yangtze River. After crossing the river, they destroyed the presidential palace and liberated Nanjing, thereby liberating the whole of China. Behind this monumental historical event lay countless loyal guardians who sacrificed their lives and blood. The Chinese Television Artists Association is about to shoot a 25-episode TV series titled “The Great Divide: 1949” as a tribute to the 60th anniversary of the founding of the nation, set against this backdrop. The senior intelligence officer of our army, Xiao Jianqiu, who was infiltrated in the Kuomintang army, undertook the crucial task of providing intelligence on crossing the river. In a perilous environment, he fought wits and courage against the enemy, persevering against all odds, and successfully completed this seemingly impossible task. In March 1949, the Chinese People's Liberation War had entered the strategic decisive stage between the Communist Party and the Kuomintang. The Central Committee decided to launch the Yangtze River Crossing Campaign. Jiangzhong County was strategically significant, housing elite troops of the Kuomintang in four divisions. To know oneself and one’s enemy, and minimize losses during the crossing, the leadership of the vanguard troops of the Third Field Army ordered Xiao Jianqiu, an underground party member codenamed "Osprey" who had been infiltrated in the Kuomintang for more than ten years, to find ways to relay intelligence about the Kuomintang troops’ river defense in Jiangzhong to the northern bank. Unexpectedly, the military intelligence agency temporarily dispatched a special task force to Jiangzhong at this time. One of the important tasks of this task force was to eliminate hidden CCP organizations and underground party members in the area. Upon arrival, the task force launched indiscriminate killing, causing bloodshed among many CCP members and innocent civilians. Xiao Jianqiu's only contact was also killed. Faced with the veteran spies of the military intelligence agency and with his own situation precarious, Xiao Jianqiu needed to re-establish communication with his organization while also assisting the crossing reconnaissance team and the county party committee in identifying hidden spies. With the imminent battle approaching, Xiao Jianqiu's time was running out... The plot is full of twists and turns, with interlinked narratives. The characters in the drama are diverse and distinctive: Communist Party members, Kuomintang agents, military spies, guerrilla fighters, and ordinary folks... The news release states that “The Great Divide: 1949” tells the story of March 1949 when the liberation war had entered the phase of strategic confrontation, and the Central Committee decided to launch the Yangtze River Campaign. Our army’s senior intelligence officer Xiao Jianqiu, who was infiltrated in the Kuomintang army, undertook the crucial task of providing intelligence for our troops. He thrived in a hostile environment, fighting with intelligence and bravery, and completed this nearly impossible mission. The leading role is played by Tao Zeru. Famous actor Gao Fa, known for his roles in “General Ye Ting,” “Defending Yan'an,” and “Emperor Wu of Han,” plays the role of our army’s senior intelligence officer Xiao Jianqiu, hidden within the enemy forces. Tao Zeru, whose position as a “veteran of drama” is solidified by several films and TV series such as “Life Show,” “Red Lovers,” and “Order of Jiangcheng,” plays Kuomintang agent Zhou Peixi. It is said that the two have had a friendship of over twenty years off-screen, but in the drama, their relationship remains in a state of “stalemate”: one is upright and righteous, while the other is cunning and calculating, showcasing a battle between good and evil, recreating the tumultuous history before the founding of New China in 1949. The producer of “The Great Divide: 1949” said, “This drama decided to cast Gao Fa as the protagonist not only because of his tall and handsome appearance but also because he embodies strong masculine and heroic qualities. His personality is unassuming, but his inner self surges with warm gentleness. This is exactly the trait needed for the character of Xiao Jianqiu.” Gao Fa indeed performs with both restraint and intensity. His deep affection for comrades, profound hatred for the enemy, and hidden personal feelings are all captured with precision and moderation, vividly and subtly portrayed. Additionally, Hu Ke plays a mysterious female spy, Yan Yi, from the military intelligence agency in “The Great Divide: 1949.” Hu Ke stated that prior to filming, she underwent special training, specifically practicing military skills such as handling guns and combat, hoping to portray this complex character to perfection.
