The talented young scholar Tang Bohu (played by Huang Xiaoming) is extraordinarily gifted but cynical and indifferent to fame. After defeating the talented scholar Song Renjie (played by Zhang Mingjian) from Hangzhou, he develops a grudge against him. To discipline Bohu, his mother arranges for him to marry eight unattractive wives.
