During the ten-year civil war, the underground party member Gong Weiping from the Chinese Communist Party in Beiping was tasked with developing a party organization within the independent battalion of the remnants of the Anti-Japanese Allied Forces in Chahar. Due to betrayal, the 25 candidates Gong Weiping identified were captured and at death's door. In an attempt to save their lives, Gong Weiping voluntarily "surrendered," but fell into the traps set by the central authorities. Yu Xueyao, who had a secret crush on Gong Weiping, pleaded with her brother — Yu Qinzai, who was the deputy director of the central authorities — to release Gong Weiping. Yu Qinzai agreed to his sister's request to win over Gong Weiping and devised a series of traps.
At this time, Gong Weiping received a secret directive from his superior, codenamed Comrade Zhuguang, instructing him to infiltrate the Nationalist Party's central intelligence agency. To complete this special mission, Gong Weiping had to part ways with his beloved girlfriend and marry Yu Xueyao. However, shortly thereafter, Comrade Zhuguang was killed in an accident, leaving Gong Weiping cut off from the party organization, and the mission to infiltrate the central intelligence agency became a secret known to no one else. Faced with this reality, Gong Weiping resolutely chose a path of extreme hardship, twists, and pain, changing his name to Gong Xiangguang to express his determination.
On their wedding night, he cleverly eliminated the traitors in the underground party and achieved merit in his battle against Japanese spies. Yu Qinzai, fully aware that Gong still harbored loyalty to the Communist Party, designed situations to force him into an unfavorable position, making Gong Xiangguang appear as a traitor in the eyes of the party organization. Although Gong Xiangguang was deeply distressed, he silently bore the humiliation and contributed to the party to clear his name and fulfill his secret mission.
After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan, Gong Xiangguang was transferred to the deputy director of the Weicheng Investigation Office of the central intelligence agency. At this time, his old classmate Qin Jian was in charge of the Communist Party's intelligence office in Weicheng. Gong Xiangguang thought he could restore contact with the party, but unexpectedly, he became a target for the underground party's purging actions. Despite his comrades' hostility and purging operations, he selflessly assisted the underground party in secretly transporting a batch of urgently needed supplies to the border region, changing Qin Jian's initial view of him. Qin Jian expressed his willingness to undergo an organizational investigation to clear Gong's unjust charges and encouraged him to continue working for the party in enemy territory.
Soon, Zhou Enlai passed through Weicheng. The military intelligence chief Yan Kun and Japanese spies attempted to assassinate him. In view of his friendship with Zhou as his former teacher, the deputy commander of a Nationalist military region, Bian Guolie, ordered intelligence officers Ouyang He and Gong Xiangguang to ensure Zhou's safety. With Ouyang's assistance, Gong Xiangguang thwarted the assassination plot, allowing Zhou Enlai to leave Weicheng safely and helping the Eighth Route Army Office identify and eliminate a hidden spy. Consequently, Gong Xiangguang requested to rejoin the organization, but he was met with disappointment.
At this time, a Major General from the Eighth Route Army who was engaged in united front work within the Nationalists suddenly went missing, prompting Bian Guolie to assign Gong Xiangguang to investigate the case. He captured the real culprit and cleverly provided evidence to the underground party, exposing Chiang Kai-shek's conspiracy to the public. Afterward, he again requested to rejoin the party, only to find himself in deep anguish once more.
The threat from the Military Intelligence Bureau to the Weicheng underground party's intelligence work grew increasingly severe, and Gong Xiangguang risked his life time and again to avert danger for the underground party. In light of his special contributions, the underground party agreed to arrange for him to go to Yan'an to report his grievances and potentially return to the party. Just as he was filled with joy, the situation in the border region suddenly changed, and the trip to Yan'an had to be shelved, subjecting Gong Xiangguang once again to the whims of fate. Nevertheless, during this period, he continued to eliminate hidden spies within the underground party and assisted in completing task after task.
Not long after, Qin Jian, who knew and trusted Gong Xiangguang the most, unfortunately, fell into captivity and was killed. Gong Xiangguang's hopes of clearing his unjust charges and returning to the organization became extremely dim. In near desperation, he bravely persevered once more, propelled by his unwavering faith and relentless pursuit.
Gong Xiangguang's actions in Weicheng were under constant surveillance from Yu Qinzai, while he was also doubted by the internal members of the central intelligence agency and military intelligence. After Yu Qinzai’s secret attempts to test him proved ineffective, the military intelligence chief Yan Kun’s confidential report landed him in a Chongqing prison. Just before Chiang Kai-shek issued an execution order, Ouyang He's all-out rescue efforts allowed him to be reborn.
Upon returning to Weicheng, Gong Xiangguang left the central intelligence system and became a staff officer under Bian Guolie. He selflessly transmitted the military action plans of Hu Zongnan and Bian Guolie’s attack on Yan'an, contributing significantly to the defense of the Central Committee.
On the eve of the liberation of Weicheng, he cleverly leveraged internal conflicts among the enemy to obtain the complete list of undercover agents and their sabotage plans, thwarting their conspiracy to destroy important facilities in Weicheng before their escape.
After Gong Xiangguang's situation was reported to Yan'an, a central investigation led to his long-time wish finally being fulfilled, allowing him to return to the embrace of the party.
The film intertwines personal fate with the national liberation struggle, weaving together the personal emotions of joy and sorrow, humiliation and endurance, with the unyielding pursuit of faith, presenting a tense, suspenseful, and dramatic story that tells the extraordinary life of a member of the Communist underground party, showcasing the heart journey of a great soul.
