The young and beautiful actress Cai Meng from the Qinqiang opera troupe is the ideal girlfriend of the Qinqiang director, Lixiang. The two struggle to raise funds to produce a grand Qinqiang opera. Just as Lixiang decides to propose to his girlfriend, his ex-wife, former troupe actress Han Qing, unexpectedly returns from out of town with a five or six-year-old boy named Dazhi. Because half of Lixiang's house is under Han Qing's name, when his ex-wife asks to stay temporarily, Lixiang, feeling soft-hearted, cannot refuse seeing her with a child. Yet, he cannot explain the situation to Cai Meng. To avoid arousing his girlfriend's suspicions, Lixiang devises ways to gather enough money to buy back the other half of the house, but Han Qing refuses. She presents an agreement that requires Lixiang to be the temporary father of the child for three months. If Lixiang agrees, at the end of the term, Han Qing will give up her half of the house and leave. This agreement excites and troubles him at the same time. Manager Cheng, a businessman who becomes enamored with Cai Meng's performances, is willing to invest in the troupe, but Cai Meng's frequent invitations to commercial events upset Lixiang. Cai Meng believes Lixiang has abandoned his dream of revitalizing Qinqiang and is also dissatisfied, which leads to a crisis in their relationship.
