After the Hundred Regiments Offensive, the Eighth Route Army immediately disbanded overnight. Except for a portion of the troops left to protect the Eighth Route Army headquarters while they broke through to the mountains and played hide-and-seek with the Japanese troops, the remaining units dispersed in all directions to break through the encirclement, rushing out of the Japanese siege into the mountains and plains, and joined the local people to wage guerrilla warfare. During the breakout, Chief of Staff Zhao Yun of the brigade was separated by the Japanese troops and encountered Cavalry Company Commander Li Qiang of a certain unit of the Eighth Route Army. The two then met the experienced old soldier Old Qu, the alert squad leader Zhou, and the recently enlisted vagrant Xiao Luo. The five of them were mistakenly taken to the Japanese Eagle Mountain coal mine by a traitor. Under the leadership of Li Qiang and Zhao Yun, the laborers in the coal mine revolted, and everyone finally escaped from this hell on earth. Due to the outstanding performance of the five, superior orders officially formed them into an armed work team to operate behind enemy lines, appointing Zhao Yun as the team leader. From then on, this active Eighth Route Army armed work team faced a harsh struggle environment, plunging into the sea like a dragon, fighting shoulder to shoulder with many Chinese anti-Japanese fighters, engaging in life-and-death battles against the cruel Japanese puppet troops and traitors time and again.
