In the late Cultural Revolution, on a riverboat traveling from Chongqing to Wuhan, several people, each with their own troubles, share a room: poet Qius stone (Li Zhixing), imprisoned for six years on unfounded charges, is secretly escorted by case officers Liu Wenying (Zhang Yu) and Li Yan (Qiang Ming), with a dangerous journey ahead; an elderly woman (Ouyang Ruqiu), whose only son died in the violent struggles, boards the boat to mourn her son; a rural girl, Xinghua, is forced to "sell herself to pay off debts," tears in her eyes as she thinks of her beloved...
