In the late Cultural Revolution, on a riverboat traveling from Chongqing to Wuhan, several people, each with their own troubles, share a room: poet Qius stone (Li Zhixing), imprisoned for six years on unfounded charges, is secretly escorted by case officers Liu Wenying (Zhang Yu) and Li Yan (Qiang Ming), with a dangerous journey ahead; an elderly woman (Ouyang Ruqiu), whose only son died in the violent struggles, boards the boat to mourn her son; a rural girl, Xinghua, is forced to "sell herself to pay off debts," tears in her eyes as she thinks of her beloved... Because Liu Wenying and Li Yan both present themselves as a "typical revolutionary young officer" and a shrewd strategist respectively, they are not favored by the others. Additionally, a little girl sneaks onto the boat when no one is watching. The tragic plight of Xinghua incites great indignation among the group, but they are powerless to help her; the elderly woman's strength fails to move Xinghua. Later, she prepares to end her life by jumping into the river, but Qius stone saves her, telling the love story between himself and Liu Gu (Zhao Jing), which rekindles Xinghua's courage to live. Having disregarded life and death, Qius stone is unexpectedly brought back to life when the onboard police officer Lao Wang (Zhong Xinghuo) gains the little girl’s trust. It turns out she boarded the ship to find her father, and through the clues she provides, Lao Wang deduces that she is Qius stone's daughter. While everyone worries about Qius stone's safety, a guilt-ridden Liu Wenying decides to extend a helping hand to the father and daughter at any cost.
