The film is a remake of the classic 1973 escape movie starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, telling the story of Henry, played by Charlie Hunnam, a professional pickpocket who is framed for the murder of a pimp and subsequently exiled to a prison in French Guiana surrounded by the sea. Because he has a butterfly tattoo on his chest, his fellow inmates call him "Papillon." From the day he enters the prison, Papillon plans his escape, but escaping requires bribing the guards with money and acquiring a boat for the getaway.
