A young French girl, Mary (played by Edna Purviance), falls in love with a young man named John (played by Carl Miller), but their relationship faces opposition from their families. So, John and Mary plan to elope to Paris. However, on the night they are supposed to leave, John's father sadly passes away, and John cannot keep the appointment. Mary believes John has changed his mind and, in her sadness and pain, travels to Paris alone. Years go by, and Mary has become the mistress of the wealthy Pierre (played by Adolphe Menjou), living a life of excess. One day, she unexpectedly reunites with John, who is now an obscure painter, but their love reignites. However, John's mother does not believe in Mary's feelings for her son and tries to separate them.
